Product Vs Project Management
OK, so how many times has this occurred: someone asks you what you do for a living and you tell them that you are a Product Manager and they fire back at you
“Oh, so you manage projects?” Grrr, it’s really no fair – the two disciplines really have nothing in common. Well wait a minute, maybe they do. No, no they really are different. Dang it. What’s the difference between the two?
A lot of the confusion comes from the simple fact that the two jobs do share a lot of things in common. However, never fear, they really are completely different no matter what your friends or your boss tell you. In a nutshell, the differences fall into three different categories: scope, execution, and results.

Three P of Project Management – Project Scoping & Planning, Process and People
Project Management has become more and more important as the life cycle of the product is getting shorter and shorter. If you just take a good look at the mobile phone, how many color of mobile phone do we have 10 – 15 years ago? I believe, it has only one color and there are not many models around as well. But, let’s look at the situation today, how many models and color of mobile phone do we have today? I don’t think I’m able to count.
So, why does the product life cycle have to do with project management?

High Tech Product Management
Product Management–what does this mean in a High Tech company? What is the function, and where does it belong? I’ve held permanent positions in a number of high tech concerns, as with PJM Consulting I have worked with many more in a consulting capacity.
Product Management is all over the map in High Tech. Most often it resides in the marketing department. Sometimes, it’s in the engineering/product development department. Occasionally you will see it as it’s own function. And again, what does the term mean in a High Tech company? Sometimes it is used interchangeably with the term “Product Marketing”. In this case, it means responsibility from cradle to grave of the product planning and marketing functions for a particular product or product line. In other words, working with the developers to define the product (product planning), as well as driving the other “3Ps” for the product–setting pricing, distribution strategy and promotional strategy.
