It hardly matters what business industry sector you are in productivity is one of the most important things in business. Without solid production you can’t create your product, or deliver the services to your customer. You cannot enjoy the economies of scale which allow you to do all you do at a low cost so that you may keep the difference and profit from what you sell. Still, production is a tricky thing and it’s nearly impossible to have picture-perfect productivity 100% of the time.
However, if the company manages for disruptive risks in their production cycles, their scheduling of services, and their delivery to the customer, then what might be considered a calamity to one company, could just be a matter of shifting gears for another. Some modern-day production assembly lines actually go in a circles rather than a long line. If there is a direct disruption or there is a problem with the supply-chain the units continue around the circle until the problem is solved.
They never have to go all the way back in line to finish off the item that was messed. These types of looped systems are one way of managing disruptive risks of production. Often, in a service business it is possible to change the procedure and complete one task that would normally be done after another when there are a lack of materials or supplies.
This is quite common with building contractors that are building new homes, and yet, it’s to be expected that not everything will go as planned 100% of the time and thus, you must have contingencies for these things. In the case of a building or construction project; a very good production manager or general contractor will also be able to work on the fly drawing on previous experience in critical situations. Please consider all this, and think of ways to manage your production in search of a potential disruption.
